Somaliland has a coastline of 850 km. These waters are home to many different types of fish, but Somaliland fishermen catch very small fish that are less than 5% of the total fish stocks in the sea. In the past, people in Somaliland preferred fish to animal meat, but recently there has been an increase in fish consumption due to two factors;
• Livestock is more expensive in urban areas
• And people now understand the health benefits of eating fish
To increase fish production, create jobs, and improve the living conditions of the people, the Somaliland Development Fund (SDF) has supported the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries Development, the implementation of the Mayd Port Reconstruction Project; Capacity Building and Fisheries Management.
This project aims to increase fish production by developing key infrastructure and administrative capacity of the Ministry.
The project has helped reduce losses during fish production by rehabilitating and rebuilding fish production and storage infrastructure to boost fish production and income.
The Somaliland Development Fund (SDF) is a grant to support the Somaliland government in implementing development programs in line with the National Development Plan. The Somaliland Development Fund (SDF) is co-sponsored by the United Kingdom, Denmark, Norway and the Netherlands (Holland).
